POSITIONING SOLAR CHARGER

Solar panels on the feeder and control box should be set up in full direct sunshine at the middle of the day facing south in the United States. Morning and evening sunlight hits the panels at an acute angle reducing the total amount of solar power which can be generated each day.

Spring

The sun starts to climb higher in the sky. Charging will be much better in mid afternoon and 25-40 degree solar charger angles are needed. Charging will be more difficult in early morning and late evening.

Summer

The sun is approaching the most direct angle to the Earth (Summer Solstice, June 21st) . Batteries will charge fastest with 45-60 degree charger angles.

Fall

The sun begins its descent in the sky. Charging will be much better in mid afternoon and 25-40 degree solar charger angles are needed. Charging will be more difficult in early morning and late evening with acute angles.

Winter

The sun is at the lowest angle to the Earth. Only a 15-25 degree solar charger angle is needed in the afternoon. Very little charging is available mornings and evenings.
